    According to Johnston, Old Montrose is c.1178 Munros, moine rois 'moss on the promontory' which applies to the site of Old Montrose.

mòin , mòine peat, moss, Irish móin, g. móna, Early Irish móin, pl. móinte, Welsh mawn, peat, turf: *mân-; Latin mâno, flow, English emanate. Strachan takes it from *mokni-, root mok, mak, Church Slavonic mokru@u, wet, Lithuanian makone, puddle; Stokes agrees, giving Celtic as *mâkni-, môkni-. It is doubtful if Welsh k would disappear before n (cf. deur). Welsh has also a form migen, mign, a bog.
