For comparison, Ptolemy's island Counnus is positioned off the south-eastern coast of Britain.
The Isle of Walney SD1865, Wagneia 1127 is in Ekwall ON Vogney 'grampus island'. (The grampus is a small, toothed whale). Mills offers an alternative to Ekwall's as Wageney 'quaking isle'. Wagene and Waghene 1086 are recorded for Wawne TA0836, which Ekwall interpreted as 'quaking bog'. A Vagniacis is recorded in the Antonine Itineraries based on Hamp's Br *uâgnâ 'marsh', which appears to be equally suitable.
The isle forms a harbor
with the Furness headland.
Celtic*counos 'harbor'.
