The Roman Map of Britain Uensuron Wansbeck, Northumberland

Coguueusuron var. Coguuensuron (R&C 264) next
Abraouannou Abravannus, Abraouanou Abravanus, Auraouannou Auravannus, Auraouanou Auravanus, Abrananou Abrananus (Ptolemy II 3 2)

Wansbeck is recorded as Wenspic and Wanspic (with permutations -piz, -pik, -pike) 12th. In EPN Ekwall considered it to be a compound of OE węgn 'wagon' and *spic 'bridge'.

In the Geography, both Ptolemy's Abravannus and Iena (Tena), the Tyne, are wrongly positioned on the Dumfriesshire coast. The variants Aura- better resemble the -uro- of the Cosmography. Ptolemy's form appears to invert the elements. Perhaps ABRA- is an error for [OL]LBRA- < OMBRA- ombra 'rain'.
