The Roman Map of Britain Trexula River Test, Hampshire
Traxula (R&C 236) next
The River Test is certainly to be equated with the entry, even if on no other grounds than its geographic proximity and place in the sequence. Another record of the name exists in the Trucculensem Portum (acc.) var. Trutulensem Portum of Tacitus Agricola 38 4. The closest modern survival of this form is Trysull, the old name of Smestow Brook (SO89)of Staffordshire - (on) Tresel 985.
The Test is first recorded as (on) Terstan 877.
The Test / Southampton Water may have been the departure/return point for Agricola's fleet.
