The Roman Map of Britain Isanna Nene
Certisnassa (R&C 255) next
Certis- for Cretis and -isnassa for Isanna share one -is-, the other was lost in conflation.
The Nene begins with two arms rising near Daventry and Naseby which join at Northampton. Near Wellingborough the Nene is joined by the Ise, which also rises near Naseby. On the Nene at Whilton Lodge (SP6164) is the Roman settlement traditionally known as Bannaventa. One of the three recorded forms of this site is Isannavantia, its IS explained as an erroneous reading of B. The opposite might be said of the other two B's.
Ise is recorded as (andlang) Ysan 956, Yse ca.1200.
