The Roman Map of Britain Veluelannio Nursling Mill, Hampshire

Boluelaunio (R&C 31) next

Nursling Mill (SU3615) is on the bank of the River Test opposite the joining Blackwater. The Blackwater's former name, (on) Welewe 672, survives in the village names of East and West Wellow (ERN p.446) and is based on *uelu- 'to wind, to turn'. The remaining -launio may be for lann-io, Welsh llan 'an open, clear place', with -io suffix. Veluelannio is then 'Wellow clearing'.
Pokorny lendh-3  OIr. land `free space' (Dat. ith-laind `area', with ith `grain'), Gall.-Rom. *landâ `heath', W. llan `area' (OW it-lann, W. ydlan `area'), Corn. lan, Bret. lann `heath, steppe'.

Nursling is located on the Roman road Margary 422 (Otterbourne to Park Farm) which takes us to the next entry Alauna (R&C 32).
