The Roman Map of Britain Landonio Tilston, Cheshire
Saudonio (R&C 85) next
I propose to correct Saudonio to Landonio and assign it to Tilston (sj4551). The settlement at Tilston is connected by Margary 6a (watling street. chester-wroxeter) to the previous entry Mediolano Whitchurch (R&C 84) and the next entry Deua Chester (R&C 86). I submit the name is transferred from the Iron age hill-fort known as Maiden Castle, Bickerton (sj497529). Landonio 'plain fort' seems appropriate, it being on the same lan- 'plain' as Mediolano, but perhaps Welsh llan 'an open, clear place'.
