    The Roman fort at Wreay (NY4449) Peterelwra 1268 is on the river Petteril Peterel 1268. The -wra of the village name appears to be for ON vrá 'secluded nook or corner of land', thus Wreay. The -el of Peterel may be W glais 'stream'.
One other fort is on the Petterel, Old Penrith (NY4938) known as Voreda. The Roman fort at Stanwix (NY4057) is one kilometer downstream from its junction with the Eden.
