The Roman Map of Britain Onna East Anton, Hampshire
Onna (R&C 40) next
According to ERN15 both Pillhill Brook and the River Anton were likely once called as Ann(e). Ekwall equates Ann with the river-name Onny based on Welsh onn 'ash-trees'. The river-name Anton is an antiquarian restoration based on the Antona of Tacitus. The early forms point to Andefer 'Ann rivers'. East Anton (SU3747) is connected to the next entry Venta Belgarum Winchester (R&C 41) by the Roman road Margary 43.
Richmond and Crawford assigned Leucomagno (R&C 45) to East Anton and Onna to Nursling. Ordnance Survey's 2001 Historical Map and Guide: Roman Britain puts Onna at both Iping and Neatham, each with question marks.
