The Roman Map of Britain Maromago Inveresk, Musselburgh, Midlothian or Caromago Livingston

Maromago (R&C 180) next

I follow R&C/Williams on this. Their derivation is maro- 'great', -mago 'plain' and indicates the Midlothian plain.

Inveresk (nt3472)

As thoroughly reasonable as Williams' assignment to Inveresk, and as Celtic as the form appears; what if M is the result of a double-stop and C, i.e. //C ? A *Caromago would suit the Roman fortlet at Kirkton/Livingston (NT0366) above the Kirkton Campus. Caro-mago 'Carum river-plain' is based on the British name of the River Almond found in  Carum Cramond.
