The Roman Map of Britain Leucomago Heddington Wick, Calne Without, Wiltshire
Leuco magno (R&C 45) for Leucomago next
Considering the next entry is Cunetzone
for Cunetione (R&C
46)
Mildenhall, a site connected by a Roman road is expected. Verlucione
Sandy Lane ST9667 of Iter XIV
shares both
a road, Margary 53, and the element leuco found in river-names such as
Lugg, Llugwy, and Loughor. If Verlucione can be considered as a compound
of British uer- 'over' as in Verteuia (R&C
14) and a river-name, then the stream* below Sandy Lane is our Leuc-.
We need only look below Sandy
Lane on the mago 'plain' of the Leuc- to find the site.
Heddington Wick (ST9867),
originally identified as Verlucio by Stukeley, was a substantial
roadside settlement on the river-plain. Downstream, the village Tytherton Lucas
(ST9474) would appear to be of
different derivation as it was held by a Richard Lucas in 1202.

*The stream joining the Marden from the south may have been called the Sambourne in the 13th century and was later called the Whetham
stream.
