The Roman Map of Britain - Kainos Limen

KainoV limen (Ptolemy II 3 3)

Ptolemy's KainoV limhn, translated to Latin as Novus Portus, is located between the river Arun and the South Foreland at Dover. There are some hazards in translating this as 'New Harbor'. It could be related to Nova (R&C 68) and Novia (R&C 267) if Novus was a river-name. Another consideration is that limhn 'port' might be a transcriptional error for limnh 'pool of standing water, marshy lake, mere'. 'Mere' could apply to any number of places between Lympne and the Ouse; of particular interest in the case of Nova are the levels west of Pevensey. Even KainoV looks similar to a river-name based on OW cein 'beautiful', see ERN 69 Candover.

PNRB 428 assigns Novus Portus to Dover (tr3141).
