The Roman Map of Britain Iscalis or Loxalis ? Loxton? Somerset

IscaliV Ischalis, vars. IskaliV Iskalis, IskalliV Iskallis (Ptolemy II 3 13) a polis of the Belgae

Iscalis is held to be based on the old name of the Somerset Axe, Isca. The only troublesome aspect is that the more authoritative spellings are with chi (c) rather than kappa (k).

If IscaliV is an error for LocaliV Loxalis, then a case for a site on the Lox Yeo River can be made. Loxton ST3755 Lochestone 1086 is at the mouth of the Lox Yeo (on, & lang) Loxan 931 where it empties into the Old River Axe.
