The Roman Map of Britain - Epocessa Stretford Bridge? and Ypocessa

Epocessa (R&C 59)

Ypocessa (R&C 60) next

Williams considered Ypocessa a correction for the previous Epocessa, but still an error for Yposessa 'horse stalls'. If these represent a single entry, then the site would be connected by road to the either the previous or following entry. Connection to the previous, Branogenium Leitwardine, is extremely unlikely* as it is at the northernmost edge of the quadrant and Ypocessa would have to be farther north.

*Continuing north from Branogenium, the preceding entry, on Margary 6 is the Roman fort at Stretford Bridge SO4284 opposite the entry to Ape Dale, where Quinny Brook joins the Teme. CDEPN interprets the name as ON 'Api's valley', Apedal(e) 1277. While this is a bit farther north than I expected, it is quite attractive to consider Ep-  surviving as Ape.

Connection to the following entry, Macatonion for Maridunum Carmarthen, is possible, but with few available sites. The potential sites would be on roads radiating generally eastward from Carmarthen, Margary 623 to Llandovery and Margary 60d to Loughor. Loughor was known as Leucara, and Llandovery looks to be in the northwest quarter. A possible villa is listed by Scott at Dynevor Park (SN6222) on Margary 623 near Llandeilo. The site is near the junction of the Afon Cennen with the Towy.
(Since the above was written,  two forts have been discovered at Dinefwr/Dynevor Park, Llandeilo SN6122.)

Another possibility is that Carmarthen is not on the western edge of  the southwestern quarter. It is possible that the quarter was not inventoried, and that Carmarthen is on the eastern edge of another unrecognized quadrant. If so, roads westward (none listed by Margary) might lead to an Ypocessa.

But the possibility remains that there may be two sites, Epocessa and Ypocessa. Ep- and Ypo- look very much like the Greek prefixes for 'on, upon' and 'under, beneath', epi- and upo-. It looks as if they are combined with -ocessa (ocella?). A pair of sites could exist in the northeast quarter, Y Gaer and Pen y Gaer on Margary 62b, for example.

There is a stream mentioned in the Liber Llandavensis recorded as Hebog. It is in the vicinty of Llanerthill (ST4304) and is either the old name of the Olway Brook, or its tributary Pont-y-rhydan Brook. If Hebog represents the Olway Brook, then Epocessa (R&C 59) might be found near Usk (recorded as Burrio), but more likely in the form *Ebocella 'Eboc-stream'.
