The Roman Map of Britain Carumabo Cramond

-ca Rumabo (R&C part of 189, all of 190) next
PRO CAR (Britannia VII (1976) 382 roughly-squared stone found north of the fort, altar?)

The inscription PRO CAR is likely a dedication to the genius loci, the guardian spirit of Cramond, and its eponymous river.

Cramond Karramunt 1166-1214, Caramonde 1178-9, Caramonth ca.1200  looks like Car-eamôt, Car + OE 'river-meeting', that would be with the Forth. The root of Car- is uncertain; see ERN 70 Carant, Carey, etc. and Scottish Place-names 187-8 Cart, Carron, etc. Either 'love' or 'stone' would be the meaning of the root. The widely accepted interpretation is 'Caer 'fort' on the river Almond'.
