The Roman Map of Britain Bannovalium (?)

Bannovallum vars.Bannoualum, Baunoualum (R&C 105) next

This is traditionally assigned to the Roman settlement at Horncastle (TF2569), the attraction being its location on the River Bain. The alternatives are sites connected directly by road to Lincoln, or sites connected directly by road to Brough-on-Noe.

One possibility for a site linked with Brough-on-Noe is the Templeborough (SK4191) Roman fort at the junction of the Rother with the Don (Danovalium? Danovallum? Danovium?).

Possible sites connected to Lincoln include Ancaster  (SK9843) on the Slea, Sapperton (TF0132) on the East Glen River, Bourne on Car Dyke and Great Casterton (TF0009) on the River Gwash. Lincoln is practically in the northwest corner of the quarter and the sites to the east are either out of the quarter, reached by a less than direct path, or are on a road that departs the quarter before returning.

Among those to the south where vallum 'a fortification, defence' would be appropriate are Great Casterton, Sapperton and Ancaster.
