The Roman Map of Britain Alauna Castleshaw?, Yorkshire

Alūna var., Basel ms., a difficult reading, Alicinca, Alicuna (R&C 110) next

The previous entry Mamucio is in the south-east quarter, and soon follow the sites of the north-west quarter. Alūna must be paired with Mamucio, or the next entry Camuloduno, or both. Since Camuloduno cannot be paired with what follows it (Lancaster), it must be in the south-east quarter, and Alūna paired with it. R&C's reasonable placement of Camuloduno at Slack then forces Alūna to Castleshaw (SD9909) between Slack and Manchester.

But Mamucio is already paired with Zerdotalia. Alūna need not be connected with Mamucio by road since it can be separately paired with Camuloduno. R&C associate Ptolemy's Olicana with Alūna placing it at Ilkley (se1148) despite the etymological difficulties. PNRB suggests Elslack (sd9249), assigning RIB 635's Verbeia to Ilkley. If Elslack is Alūna/Olicana/Olenaco, then Camuloduno can still be a missing stage in AI's Iter II,  Margary 721 connects Elslack by way of Keighley and Bradford to a point on Margary 712 northeast of Cleckheaton.
