The Roman Map of Britain Alouergium Dundry Hill, Avon or Beacon Hill, Somerset

Alouergium (R&C 22) next

Derivation: British *alo- 'rock' and *uerco- *uergo- 'work', thus *alouergium = quarry.

There is a Roman stone quarry at Dundry Hill ST5566 on Margary 546.

Another quarry is at the junction of Margary 5b Fosse Way and Margary 45b old sarum - mendip hills (charterhouse).
Beacon Hill
ST6346

The element uerg- also offers the possibility that a river-name is involved. See ERN pp 449-50 Were as in Warminster, postulated as a relative of MW gwery 'active'. There is no Roman road known through Warminster, but a path from Bath to Old Sarum along the modern A36 would service an otherwise vacant portion of the map.
