The Roman Map of Britain Burrio? Usk, Monmouthshire

Burrio (AI 4845 Iter xii)
Burrio (AI 4851 Iter xiii)
Boullaion Bullaeum vars. Boulleon Bulleum, Boulaion Bulaeum (Ptolemy II 3 12) a polis of the Silures

The equation of Ptolemy's Bullaeum with Burrio is uncertain, but reasonable.

There is a stream mentioned in the Liber Llandavensis recorded as Hebog. It is in the vicinty of Llanerthill (ST4304) and is either the old name of the Olway Brook, or its tributary Pont-y-rhydan Brook. If Hebog represents the Olway Brook, then Epocessa (R&C 59) might be found at Usk. Olway Brook joins the River Usk just south of the town. A more likely form would be *Ebocella 'Eboc-stream'.

Ebog is considered to be an early Celtic borrowing of OE heafuc 'hawk'. Breeze considers the borrowing's phonology abnormal.
